Comments and questions are always welcome. However, I do get a tremendous amount of mail and may not be able to respond to your specific request.
Who Am I? | My Background and Skills Who Am I?I am a private consultant working with companies, organizations, and agencies to develop their use of the Internet for career management, career transition and job search. I have presented workshops and seminars on these topics and developed websites for organizations to use with their customers. Past clients include college career centers, counseling groups and organizations, job clubs, outplacement firms, libraries, and government agencies.
I worked with Drake Beam Morin for several years, developing and support their online career information services. I have also worked with the Employment and Training Administration of the US Department of Labor. I created the original resource libraries for America's Career InfoNet and America's Job Bank (shut down June 30, 2007). Most recently, I developed and continue to maintain and develop the Virtual Career Center for the Office of Intramural Training & Education at the National Institutes of Health. From June 1996 until November 1999, I was the Internet columnist for the National Business Employment Weekly (ceased print publication Nov 6, 1999) which then became CareerJournal.com from the Wall Street Journal (and is now Wall Street Journal Online: Careers). In addition to co-authoring 2 books on the Internet and career / employment, I have authored articles for Library Journal and The Reference Librarian. My Background and SkillsI am a librarian specializing in online information architecture, design, and searching. I hold a Master of Science in Library and Information Sciences from Simmons College GSLIS. My experience in libraries includes over 13 years of public service in academic libraries with work in circulation, interlibrary services, reference, online searching, networked information, and training and instruction. I supervised students and other staff for over 10 years. In addition to my library training, I hold a Bachelors degree in music performance from The Boston Conservatory. My instrument is the Horn, and when I'm not online, you can find me in one of two places:
While working at the Gordon Library at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, I began working to develop Internet training seminars for the campus, utilizing the Internet as an information database and performing needed searches for information for the faculty, staff, and students. It was in this role that I began working to locate information on the Internet which would aid the students and alumni of WPI in their search for employment. When I resigned from WPI, I held the title of Coordinator of Networked Resources (webmaster/information services and resources) for WPI's university webserver. My role was to initiate new information resources and services for the campus, working with the various departments and offices across the campus and interacting with the system administrators to develop the desired services. I am author of The Riley Guide, the first guide to using the Internet to aid in your job search. Included in this free guide is information on using the Internet, how the Internet can be a tool in the job search and recruiting process, and links to hundreds of job resources, services, and information guides all over the Internet. While I do try to assist many who send me email requests, I do not post jobs nor resumes and I cannot do your job search for you. Here is my contact informationfor other comments, questions, and suggestions.
