About the Riley Guide

What It Isn't

The Riley Guide isn't a place to post job announcements nor resumes. We have hundreds of links to places that will do this for you.

We do not participate in partnerships nor reciprocal link arrangements with other sites.

Margaret Riley Dikel is not a recruiter nor an employment counselor nor will she assist you with your resume or your search for a new job. What she offers is this free website with its links to information and resources.

What It Is

The Riley Guide is here to serve you in two ways:
  1. It is a directory of employment and career information sources and services on the Internet
  2. It provides instruction for jobseekers and recruiters on how to use the Internet to their best advantage.

For some online services you will need an email account as well as access to the web.

Why it Looks Like it Does

The layout for The Riley Guide is purposely simple with minimal graphics. While it may not be flashy and incredibly visually attractive to some, it is usable by everyone.

Where to Find the Riley Guide

The Riley Guide is hosted on servers owned by InternetPlanners.com. The URL is http://www.rileyguide.com.

Prior to this, it was hosted by Drake Beam Morin from July 7, 1997 until August 24, 2001. From March 1, 1996 until July 1997, we were hosted by JobTrak (now MonsterTrak) after leaving our original home at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Many thanks to the folks who are always sending me new listings and resources.

Special thanks to Susan Joyce (job-hunt.org), Susan Ireland (susanireland.com), Mary-Ellen Mort (jobstar.org), Richard Nelson Bolles (jobhuntersbible.com), Joyce Lain Kennedy, Nicholas W. Rench (Drake Beam Morin), the career counselors at WPI who gave me great comments as I was starting out (Yvonne and Marybeth), all the other career counselors I have spoken to over the years (Frank, Leo, and Marcia) and the career services librarians (Liz, my co-author Frances, and the late Steve Oserman), the career management professionals (Larry, Marcy, Steve, Jerry) and the students, staff, alumni, and faculty at WPI who were the reason this all started.

The defunct Job and Career Information Services Committee of the Public Library Association had a real influence on the guide and were a wonderful support group over the years. They still work as a team despite the loss of their formal association.

I am deeply indebted to Steve Hoffman and Bob Stirling (both former employees of DBM) for their support and to David Bacharach at CareerSearch for introducing us. Other current and former DBM colleagues to whom I will always be indebted include Tom Silveri, Tom Schlinkert, Rancy Breece, and T. Craig Morton.

Special thanks go out to Ken Ramberg, Connie Ramberg, and Dave Franey at JobTrak (now MonsterTrak) for responding to a plea for help when everything was in an uproar as I was leaving WPI. They made room for the guide on their webservers and made it very easy to get everything rolling safely. Moving The Riley Guide from their site was like leaving the nest for the first time.

And I must single out Lou Rosenfeld for his past support. Librarian, online information architect extraordinaire, and the founder of the Argus Clearinghouse, Lou helped the Riley Guide go public way back in January 1994.

The Riley Guide does not host a job database nor a resume database. We link to hundreds of sites that offer those services.
