Executive Job Search & Career Management Advice

This page lists resources directed towards mid-to-senior level executives and reported to be very useful by these same persons. However, many resources listed throughout the guide include job listings at this level. The good news is yes, executives can search for new job opportunities online. The bad news is most of the best sources are fee-based, but they are usually worth the expense.

You may also be interested in our Directories of Recruiters or Search Firms. We have some listings targeted to senior executives and other professionals under job lead banks, including Manpower Professional and Spherion Professional Recruiting.

Executive Job Search and Support Services

I have separated these sites from the Executive Job Lead Sources because they are more than just job listings and resume databases. All offer networking opportunities, either online or off, and career resources, but some also offer other support services including resume review and revision services.

Exec-U-Net
Fee. A career management and job search membership organization for $100,000+ executives, offering listings of very good jobs along with a resume-review program and face-to-face networking meetings organized around the country. Several membership options are offered, depending how long you want to be active with the organization. This service has been around for several years (originally offline) and has always received very good comments from members.
RiteSite.com
Fee. RiteSite’s purpose is "to provide the strongest and most comprehensive possible help to job-hunting and career-building executives”. John Lucht, author of Rites of Passage, offers members a Custom Career Service designed to “help you with everything you can do to advance your job search and long-term career development.” This includes resume preparation and posting, the ability to confidentially forward your resume to others, and connectivity to his select group of retained executive search firms. (Yes, he does background checks on each firm that wants to register as a "select firm".) This site is devoted to helping you know, contact, and build relationships with these firms. He has job listings here which are open and free for anyone to view and charges a moderate annual membership for those who want the Custom Career Service. I had an opportunity to look around "behind the password," and this site and its services are quite impressive. Members speak quite highly of it, plus John has a reputation for being one of the best.
Netshare
Fee. A fee-based service offering listings of exclusive confidential job leads, a resume database, networking forums, and career-management tools for senior executives earning $100,000+.. If you haven’t heard of Netshare, don’t be concerned. Think of the company as “the quiet guys” who don’t do as much general advertising as the competition but have a terrific reputation through word of mouth. The database is updated daily, and Netshare offers varying membership options designed to meet your current search needs. Gets high reviews from sources like Forbes and Fortune.
ExecutivesOnly.com
Fee. This service offers $70,000+ executives the opportunity to review job leads and get assistance from a career management consultant in preparing your resume, presenting yourself and planning your next career move. The people behind this service have extensive backgrounds in recruiting and outplacement and offer quality service based on what they know. They offer several membership options based on how long you wish to be a member and what services you’d like during your tenure. Discounted memberships may be available to those who are currently enrolled in an outplacement program or recently ended a program without successfully making a transition to a new opportunity. Contact them for information.

Executive Job Lead Sources

AllExecutiveJobs
...UK-based source for international senior executive positions. You do not need to register in order to view listings and apply for consideration. For an interesting view of the database listings, select Job File from the menu at the bottom of the front page. You'll see a list of fast links to the jobs by industry sector, UK location, or International location.
BlueSteps
Fee. A service of the Association of Executive Search Consultants, the worldwide professional association for retained executive search firms. BlueSteps offers two services for executives seeking new career options, Executive Profile and SearchConnect. Executive Profile allows you to submit your resume for consideration by the members of AESC. SearchConnect is a searchable directory of all AESC members that you can use to make direct contact with firms that handle searches in your industry and functional field. These services can be purchased separately or as a package. If you are actively seeking new opportunities, we recommend you purchase the package for better exposure and better connections at a lower cost.
CEO Update
Fee. CEO Update publishes CEO Job Opportunities Update listing over 150 new vacancies every two weeks for executives in associations, foundations, nonprofit organizations, and professional societies. It is really a print publication, with the website serving as an archive of positions announced in previous editions that are still open.
exec-appointments.com
Free Free Free! "We advertise permanent, interim and contract jobs over £50,000 from top executive management recruiters and employers in all areas across the UK, Europe and the rest of the world." Their search page is quite detailed, but you only need to select ONE option (like "permanent") in order to start your search. Registration is not required to search for jobs or even get the contact info to submit your resume, but by registering and storing your resume here you can save your search, execute a job agent to notify you of new listings in the database, and set up a one-button application process. You can also access their National Register for Non-Executive Directors (see Board Recruitment) from this page.
Executive Registry
Fee. Kennedy Information, publisher of several directories of recruiters, now offers a confidential online service where executives seeking new opportunities can post resumes, review "pre-qualified" postings from executive search firms, and connect with the search firms. You can purchase 6-month or 1-year memberships, and they are not cheap. However, the fees are similar to other services, Kennedy's is a well-established and trusted name in this industry, and there is a 7-day money back guarantee.
Executives on the Web.com
Free Free Free! Based in the UK, this site lists executive positions worldwide. You can search the listings for free and without registering, but will need to register in order to apply for listings through the site. Neat feature: before you can click the "Apply" button, you must say that yes, you hold work authorization for this country.
Goldjobs
Fee. A UK-based advertising portal for executives commanding salaries upward of £100,000 / €140,000. Candidates can review the listings for free and submit a resume for consideration to any listing. Those who use this site frequently may want to fill out a free registration and store a resume/cover letter on site as well as set up reminders and application tracking.
6FigureJobs.com
Free Free Free! This site "provides experienced professionals the opportunity to confidentially seek and be considered for some of the most prestigious jobs in the country." They offer a free resume database for all people who would like to be considered for the job listings they receive. Candidates with the skills and experiences to justify being considered for a senior level position will be given access to the site's job announcements and will be permitted to post a resume in their database. To be considered, you must submit your resume to them for evaluation. If you feel you are ready to break into the C-Suite, these folks could give you the opportunity.
TheLadders
Free Free Free for limited access, otherwise Fee. This site for professionals in the $100K and up earnings arena offers confidential access to good jobs from around the world. The site is divided into different areas for Law, HR, Finance, Operations, Marketing, Sales, Technology, and more, and you apply directly to those jobs that interest you. They do not operate a resume database, preferring that you deal directly with the recruiters and employers who post here. You can have limited access to the jobs database for free, but the fee for full access is not only inexpensive, it comes with a good money-back guarantee.
ExecutiveSelect from Hunt-Scanlon
Free Free Free! Sorry, you can't get into the database of over 100,000 executives, but you can read their daily Leaders On the Move newsletter tracking top executive changes. You may also be interested in the daily On the Hunt newsletter with announcements of who successfully recruited who to move where. All of these announcements are taking from public press releases, so no confidential insider info, but lots of tips about potential openings and who recruits for what industries and what clients.
Experience.com
payment unknown. This is an online recruiting and career management service for the students and alumni of the many member institutions. As we have seen in similar services that target specific college career centers, you will find numerous employers posting good jobs in these databases. You will have to see if your alma mater is a member and then contact your alumni office for information.
