Multiple Fields / Green Jobs

Cassio.com
Jim Cassio is a career information & workforce development consultant, as well as an author and trainer. One of his areas of specialty is Green Careers -- what are they, who is working in a "green career", and how can you get into this area? You can download his Green Careers Resource Guide in PDF format for free from his website by registering. This is a marvelous introduction to Green Careers and provides numerous resources for you to explore this idea. While you are here, take a look at his other publication, Green Careers: Choosing Work for a Sustainable Future (2009, New Society Press), co-authored by Alice Rush. I had the great pleasure to read an advance copy of this soon-to-be-released book and I was impressed by the information presented. It is a great resource for anyone curious about sustainable jobs and how to get into any part of this expanding field. It's also a great resource for folks looking to make a side-step into a new aspect of their current work. And then there are those resource lists!
Sequence Staffing
"We are the premier executive search and staffing firm providing employment solutions to the environmental, climate change, engineering, construction, and light industrial industries." Handling searches and staffing needs in the US and abroad, Sequence offers temporary, temp-to-hire, direct hire and executive recruiting services in these various industries at all levels of engineering experience and seniority. You can review a list of current searches and submit a resume in response to any specific position that interests you (you will need to register for a free account). Qualified candidates are also welcome to submit a resume for future consideration. You may be interested in their free reports: a salary survey for California and Nevada and a Workforce Needs Assessment for the Greehouse Gas / Climate Change industry.
Jobs in the Green Industry, Job-Hunt.org
This page Job Boards that feature employment listings in this industry along with links to several employers, but don't stop here. You'll want to look over the list of Green Industry Associations in the "More On Green Jobs" box for connections to others in this field. Those of you wondering how you might fit into this growth industry should read the article Any Job Can Be a Green Job for ideas and more information leads.
Earth Science World
...weather junkies as well as those curious about the Earth in general will enjoy this site. You can view the hundreds of images in their ImageBank (including cool volcanoes and odd minerals), check for books on all aspects of the geosciences, and learn about the many careers in this diverse field. A link even takes you to the American Geological Institute's Geotimes Classifieds to check out real job openings like "Senior Petrographer". (Honest! It was listed July 6, 2004.)
EarthWorks
...jobs in Geoscience, Environmental Science, Ecology, Conservation and other related positions (Geoscientists, seismologists, mineral explorationists, petroleum professionals, ecologists/conservation biologists, environmental scientists, climate/atmospheric scientists, plant scientists, forestry professionals, agricultural scientists, oceanographers/marine scientists, aquaculture professionals, soil scientists, Remote Sensing/GIS professionals, geographers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, geocomputing specialists, space/planetary scientists and geotechnical engineers -- this list courtesy of EarthWorks.) Under Links is a list with hundreds of related resources to explore. EarthWorks is operated by an ad agency based in Cambridge, England.
Ecological Society of America Careers & Certification
..job announcements, internships, and funding opportunities that are submitted to the site. Visitors who are curious about a career in Ecology will want to look at the many resources available under Teaching & Learning.
EE-Link
...connects you to environmental education resource online, including job and grant opportunities and links to environmental organizations and projects. There are several sources for job information here. From the front page select the link for EE Job Resources. The main part of this consists of links to other sites with job listings, but in the left menu you'll see links for their Enviro Ed Job Search, a meta-search capability that will scan for jobs on specific sites listing jobs in EE, and View EE Jobs, a link to their own database of job announcements. However, review the entire site for information on grant opportunities, professional resources, and much more.
EcoEmploy.com was EJobs
...Some good listings here, and lots of links to additional info for jobs in both the US and Canada. Nice list of employers in environmental fields that you can browse alphabetically or regionally by state or province.
EnvironmentalCareer.com
...the Environmental Career Center in Virginia has comprehensive environmental and natural resources job listings that cover all experience levels from entry-level to senior management. There are even listings for environmental support jobs and career changers.
Green Dream Jobs
....connecting people with business skills to environmentally-conscious employers. These range from trade / labor to mid-level managers and senior executives. Hosted by SustainableBusiness.com, a website dedicated to helping green businesses grow.
GreenJob Spider
...a job-search aggregator targeted to the "green jobs" industry. It searches several green or environmental jobs sites as well as other large boards for specific terms to compile a list of jobs for this growing field. You will be directed back to the original source to read the full listing and submit an application. You can establish a job alert, but you will need to register (free). GreenJob Spider is a product of AllCountyJobs.com, operator of several other job sites.
Juara Turtle Project
Located in the tiny fishing village of Juara, on the East coast of Tioman Island, Malaysia, the Juara Turtle Project is an environmental conservation project which aims to rejuvenate the Sea Turtle population of Tioman Island in the most natural way. JTP relies upon volunteers both physically and financially to further the project and offers year round volunteer programs, where you are able to work directly with our conservation and gardening programs. You can learn about the program, check out photos, and watch their YouTube video about the project. If you like it and are adventurous (or already heading that way), contact them about volunteering short-term or long-term. Experience with turtles not necessary.
Let's Work Green
Smaller site with very good job listings. There are actually 2 sets of listings, jobs posted here and jobs they've sourced from other sites. These include environmental scientist positions, groundwater and air quality specialists, and much more. They don't have any contact information on the site, but their domain registration is open to the public. My only other quibble -- you must create a free account in order to apply for the jobs listed here, but they do not offer anyone the opportunity to scan resumes, so I am not too concerned about that. If you are interested in any of the jobs that they've sourced from other sites, you will be directed to that site to review the full listing and apply.
Jobs in Sustainability (JobsinSustainability)
If you are unsure what "sustainability" means, then read some of the job listings. Employers can post directly, but many of the listings are pulled from SimplyHired.com. At least this way you can find these listings much more easily. My only complaints -- for some of the jobs you will be required to register with the hosting board in order to submit an application, and there is no contact info for the operator of the board. Fortunately I know that this site is operated by Chris Russell, founder of AllCountyJobs.com, LLC & Jobsinpods.com, so I am happy to pass it on to you.
Maine Conservation Corps
...a division of the Maine Department of Conservation (Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands), the MCC places members all over the state to serve on environmental and conservation projects. Positions range from three month to ten month commitments. Some members serve individually at agencies and nonprofits to address resource issues and educate Maine citizens, and others serve on Field Teams constructing and rehabilitating trails and trail structures. They offer a living allowance, health insurance and AmeriCorps education award to those eligible. Select either the Field Team or Environmental Educator program to learn about each, see current opportunities, and download an application. Please be sure to read the applicant qualifications as they differ for each program. You must be at least 18 (20 for some positions), and a U.S. citizen (U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residency permitted for some positions). Some positions require a 4-year degree or equivalent.
Montana Conservation Corps
"Picture yourself building a section of the Continental Divide Trail, or planting trees in a national park. Imagine that you are constructing a house for a low income family. Your home is a tent for much of the time, with meals shared around camp with fellow crew members. The greatest rewards – and challenges – come from learning how to work as a team with people different from you." The Montana Conservation Corps is a private, non-profit, crew based program working to improve our communities and environment in Montana. Positions run May to November and crews work a diverse range of projects including trail maintenance and building, stream and habitat restoration and weed mapping. Meals, transportation, a stipend, and an education award to be used to pay back student loans or for future education.
The Student Conservation Association
"SCA is a nationwide conservation force of college and high school volunteers who protect and restore America’s parks, forests, and other public lands." High school students can volunteer with the SCA, and students over the age of 18 can apply for internships and jobs with the association. "SCA offers 3-to-12 month, expense-paid internship opportunities in all 50 states, in more than 50 professional fields with the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, and state and local agencies, among others." At a Weed Warrior meeting, I saw a great presentation by an exotic plant management specialist with the US National Park Service, and she emphasized how the SCA interns and volunteers were utilized in this effort.
SustainLane Green Collar Job Board
"SustainLane’s green jobs board is a place where employers, recruiters, and staffers can post green jobs, and green jobs seekers can look in one convenient place for green collar work all across the country. And get this: it’s all free." Yes, it is, and no registration required either unless you want to participate in the reviews and/or blogs. You can click on the metropolitan areas at the top or use the keyword search to quickly target things that interest you. SustainLane is a site that "connects interested consumers with the tools and information on everything related to green."
WiserEarth
...an ad-free directory and social networking site for non-profits, community organizers, and concerned citizens interested in environmental sustainability and social justice. The site also contains a list of job and volunteer opportunities from all over the world. "Wiser" stands for World Index for Social and Environmental Responsibility. If this is field of interest to you, either personally or professionally, you would gain much from just visiting the site and exploring the possibilities.
WorkCabin
"Canada's outpost for Green Jobs." This site features "green" jobs in Canada and beyond, this meaning conservation, environmental, and opportunities in corporate responsibility. There are a number of really interesting and amazing opportunities listed here, and you do not need to register in order to apply for any. You can set up an account to receive job alerts, but you are also welcome to post a public resume at no cost. Workcabin is based in Simcoe, ON.

You may also want to look at Occupational Safety / Industrial Hygiene as well as Utilities: Water & Sewer for resources dealing with water quality. Visit our Career Research Center to learn more about jobs, salaries, and employment growth in Forest and Conservation Workers.

..a nonprofit scientific and educational society founded in 1904 with current members in over 60 countries. The Jobs and Careers area includes information on this field and people in it. Under Jobs there is information on internships (public) as well as position announcements (members only). Nice explanation of the relevance of this field today. Very different than my 7th grade geography class.
GeographyJobs.com
...relatively new site carrying Geography-related jobs from all over the world in all facets of this field. "Geography is a very broad field. Geographers can have expertise regarding the environment, economics, demographics, GIS, urban planning, transportation, education and more, but in the end they are still geographers with unique skills that differentiate them from most everyone else in the job market. [...] To ensure that job postings are relevant to job seeking geographers, the ads must fall into at least one of our ten geography-related job categories such as 'GIS' or 'Transportation.' " The full list of categories that appear here are Academia & Education, Economic Development, Emergency Planning, Environment, GIS & Mapping, Housing, Remote Sensing, Research & Analysis, Transportation, and Urban Planning. You will need to chose a location to target (the network of sites covers most of the world), but not all areas have listings at this time. However, it is a nice site and I hope one that will continue to grow at a good rate. Free registration is not required to view the jobs, but some job listings require you to apply through this site, which you can only do with a registered resume. You can store up to 5 confidential resumes here plus set up job alerts.
GIS Jobs Clearinghouse
....one of the best sources of GIS/IP/GPS position announcements
